I know you said I didn't damage the cam, but now my new plate isn't snug against the block. There is about 1/4 inch gap between block and plate. Is there a way to get it back in place without removing the cam??

Charles,

You probably didn't damage the cam. Just be sure to put in fresh oil, run the car for a couple hundred miles, and then replace the oil with a new filter. I've heard some metal fragments can get in there if the cover gets broken, but they should work themselves out naturally without much damage.
